In Brief: Putting business and education in touch with each other to provide work-related learning

Making connections

Business in Schools is a campaign to encourage employers to get involved in education and help schools and colleges provide work-related learning experiences for young people. The website www.businessinschools.co.uk allows schools and colleges to register their details and select the work-related learning opportunities in which they’re interested. Employers can then visit the site and find nearby schools and colleges in need of their help. If you would like to know more information on the many ways to engage with schools, why not visit the Employer Guide to engaging with education www.employers-guide.org

Why do we need Business in Schools?

Before Business in Schools, an employer wanting to get involved with education – or a school or college looking for a helpful employer – would have had to leapfrog several practical barriers to find a suitable partnership. Now Business in Schools offers an easy, straightforward way for business and education to contact each other.

The benefits

Edge believes that work-related learning has enormous benefits for young people and employers, helping young people to acquire skills and giving them a better idea of the kind of job they might want to do. For employers, getting involved in work-related learning improves young people’s employability, helps renew links with the community and often results in happier, more motivated staff.

Cognitive Visual Integration Therapy - i.e. identifying exactly why a child struggles to learn effectively and through non-invasive exercises correcting the problem. My son would have had severe learning difficulties, but CVIT corrected his problems. He is now a highly able student.
I teach Economics, Business, and Enterprise , so see a wide range of abilities. I know that all the students that I see that struggle to commit their ideas to paper (so tend to be shunted onto Business and Enterprise Courses) could in fact be far more effective learners. This is really important, not just for their life time choices, the skills gap in the UK, but we now know that life expectancy is also tied into academic success.
