My name is Shah Arafah Uddin, I am a year 12 student studying chemistry, maths and geography. I was lucky to be an intern for the Edge Foundation during the summer of 2021 as part of a programme coordinated by the Nuffield Foundation.
I have never done something like this before so I was quite nervous, to begin with. My research was about the future of maritime education and the skills needs of the maritime industry. It was based on the Maritime Futures Curriculum offered at Cowes Enterprise College, which embraces the Isle of Wight’s local heritage to offer inspiring real-life learning across a range of subject areas. I was tasked with investigating if a curriculum such as this is worthwhile to scale up across the UK and British Isles.
My placement consisted of report writing and data analysis as well as a day trip to Edge Foundation’s office in London. When I began this placement, I wasn’t good at report writing, in fact, this is what I found the most difficult and writing a report with more than 10-pages was frightening. Luckily, I had immense help from the staff at the Edge Foundation as well as my supervisor/mentor Kat. We had weekly catch up meetings in which I received feedback for the work I have done so far. I have learnt so much during my time here at Edge, including how to write a report, referencing, different methods to use as well as gathering useful data to analyse.
I want to say a huge thank you to the Edge Foundation for taking me in as their intern. I also want to thank Kat who has been a great help. I would not have written a great report without their help. For those who are interested in vocational education and inspiring young people, the Edge Foundation is the place to go. I underestimated the importance of shaping our education system before this placement. For those who are lucky enough to be an intern, take the opportunity and don't be afraid of asking for help.
Thank you.
