Introduction and overview of the webinar
Teacher externships, or ‘teacher encounters’, are a type of professional development that allows teachers to gain industry experience. The aim is to offer insights into how their subject area relates to real-world careers. They can then use what they have learned to create classroom-enriching projects and to guide students on possible future careers.

During this webinar, we get behind the scenes to learn about the origins of the teacher externship model and its evolution in the UK. We explore an Edge-led teacher externship pilot that took place in the North East of England and learn about the model’s subsequent scaling up and national roll-out – a project led by the Careers Enterprise Company.
The session also features first-hand perspectives from a chemistry teacher who undertook an externship at a hospital in her local area and an employer partner who offers externships to highlight the wealth of careers in his company. The video sessions of this virtual visit introduce the concept of externships, how they have been strategically implemented, and insights into their positive impact on teachers, employers, and learners.
