Beautiful Work - Critique and Reflection
An overview of how students can be supported to critique their own and peers work, and how they can be supported to create beautiful work.
Expeditionary Learning (EL) focuses explicitly on students creating Beautiful Work. However, all project-based learning projects have core principles of high-quality student work.
Ron Berger at EL states ‘Is there a more profound lesson than taking pride in creating work of importance and beauty for a real audience?’ (PBL Works,2023)
In this toolkit section, Beautiful Work, Critique and Reflection are introduced. Self-guided resources are:

By giving students time to reflect and giving them time and space to complete their work. In this video, Ron Berger explains why the quality of student work is a powerful element of students learning (EL Education, 2017).
EL Education has identified three key attributes of high-quality work:
These elements provoke a deeper conversation and act as a starting point for formulating a shared understanding of quality (EL Education, 2023).
In this 6-minute video, Ron Berger shares how even the youngest students can produce high quality, beautiful work through critique and reflection (EL Education, 2017a).
An example of beautiful work from XP School (2019) in 1-minute video of Expeditions 2019-20.
When critiquing (either students or staff) it is helpful to follow 3 simple rules developed by Ron Berger. These ground rules mean that feedback is helpful, well-structured and formulated. The three elements are:
