Purpose
The purpose of this training is to offer a broad overview of the teacher externship programme. To enable careers/employer engagement leads to make a decision as to whether their school is ready to facilitate teacher externships with their teachers and existing employers. Looking at Gatsby Benchmark 4 and how a teacher externship can strengthen employer engagement through a tangible activity, improve teacher’s confidence and knowledge around careers and inspire students. Supporting students to give learning a real world context, increase their understanding of the subject area and associated careers.
Aim
The aim of this training is to offer an understanding of the teacher externship programme and how it would fit into your organisation. To look at existing employer links and determine the readiness of the school to engage with employers with this activity.
What we will cover
- Overview of RWL/Edge
- Where did the teacher externship programme start? To give a context of the teacher externship programme.
- What is a teacher externship? Including a case study from an English teacher.
- Why deliver the teacher externship programme? The benefits for a school and an employer including evidence linked to the Gatsby Benchmarks and OFSTED CIF 2019.
- How would it benefit your school? An activity to start thinking about your own organisation/employer engagement and the advantages this programme will have. How will you sell this to teachers to gain buy in? How will you onboard employers?
- What would be your expected outcomes? Thinking about your own organisation what outcomes would you expect on the back of the externship? Clarity for teachers is important. Think about how the teacher can use the information gathered from their employer experience.
- Teacher externship roadmap. This will include a look at the face to face model and a virtual model.
