English and Maths are both regarded as fundamentally important parts of a comprehensive education system. This paper provides a historical overview of the role of English and Maths within technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in England.
The paper explores policy reports and developments dating from the late 19th century right up to the present day. It examines how the perceived value attributed to English and Maths, both together and as individual academic and applied subjects, has developed over time. It also discusses what the lessons are for our teaching of English and Maths in today’s system.
