The reality of the 21st Century world of work and new technologies, means students are required to develop a broader range of skills and competencies. This report commissioned by Highlands College was prompted by an ambition to widen the curriculum and qualification framework currently on offer, which was felt to be outdated and heavily focused on examinations, rather than skills and attributes.
Developed in partnership with the IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society, and the Edge Foundation, Dr Lynne Rogers (IOE) undertook a series of literature reviews to understand the international best practice and research evidence on key areas underpinning curriculum design. These include; enrichment and global citizenship; future and digital skills; health and wellbeing; mentoring and coaching; and next steps into employment, further and higher education. The report includes examples from the International Baccalaureate programme and best practice in states such as Scotland, Finland, US, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
The evidence and insights presented in this report have been used as a basis for on-going curriculum development at Highlands College.
